Online merchant survey 2022 - Payrexx is the second most used payment provider in Switzerland after PayPal

In 2022, Swiss online merchants were once again able to participate in the online merchant survey, which was conducted for the fifth time in a row by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). In the course of the survey, it turned out that 25% of all Swiss online merchants chose Payrexx as their payment provider, making Payrexx number 2 in Switzerland behind PayPal, leaving Datatrans and Worldline behind.

The representative survey, which has been highlighting the most important trends and processes in the e-commerce market since 2017 and is supported by the trade association, among others, involved 625 online retailers, of which 496, or 79% of all respondents, are active in Switzerland. Of those participants, 88% are active in the business-to-customer sector, 43% in the business-to-business sector and 13% represent manufacturer stores. In addition, at 51%, half of the retailers surveyed are so-called "omni-/multichannel retailers" and 28% are pure online retailers who are only represented online and do not have a branch. More than half of these participants operate online retail with one to four employees and annual sales of less than 500,000 Swiss francs/euros. The study can be downloaded from the ZHAW website.

Payrexx now number 2 payment provider in Switzerland - a huge leap succeeds

An elementary part of the study was to find out, among other things, which Payment Service Provider (PSP) the participating respondents use to process online transactions. As a result of the evaluation of the data of all Swiss merchants, it could be determined that 25% of all online stores choose and trust Payrexx as a PSP. This makes Payrexx, which was founded in Thun in 2015, the second most popular payment provider among Swiss online merchants behind PayPal. With PostFinance (3rd), Worldline (4th) and Datatrans (5th), it was also able to leave notable competition behind, continuing the success story and growth of recent years and, above all, confirmed by the market. Considering the market share of 5%, which Payrexx was able to achieve in the previous year's study, this year's 25% and the associated growth of 20% (!) are to be emphasized once again. This quite remarkable growth rate makes it clear that Payrexx, both with its offer as well as with its approach to work and communication, meets the needs and requirements that Swiss SMEs have and place on a payment provider to their fullest satisfaction.

THE payment provider of Swiss SMEs

Payrexx offers everything an SME's heart desires. The PCI-DSS Level 1 certified payment service provider offers its online merchants all necessary means of payment from a single source. In the form of the so-called "Swiss Collecting" service, customers have access to all locally important means of payment at the touch of a button and can offer them simply and easily in their store in order to generate transactions. Payrexx is therefore the only provider in Switzerland to offer the payment methods TWINT, Postfinance, Mastercard, VISA, Samsung Pay, Google Pay and Apple Pay from a single source with an acceptance contract. In total, Payrexx includes 40 payment providers and more than 200 payment methods and currencies from all over the world via a single interface.

TWINT is the number 1 payment method for Swiss SMEs in e-commerce

Below are statistics on the transaction volume and the number of transactions generated in August by SMEs in e-commerce in the areas of business-to-business and business-to-customer via the Payrexx platform. In the course of these representative statistics, transactions from 4,000 merchants were analyzed:

TWINT is the number 1 payment method for Swiss SMEs in e-commerce

The most widely used payment method via Payrexx is TWINT, which has a particularly high share of 44.64% of all transactions within Switzerland. Mastercard (22.65%) and Visa (20.47%) follow closely behind in second and third place. They are followed by Paypal with 4.95 % and American Express with 1.70 %. It can be observed that all credit card payments together are almost as high in quantity as TWINT payments are generated.

In contrast to the number of transactions, in terms of volume the Mastercard payment method is in first place with a share of 28.19%, followed by Visa (25.53%) and TWINT (19.03%) in second and third place. In conjunction with the previous statistics, this leads to the conclusion that although more payments are made with TWINT, these involve smaller amounts than, in this case, payments made with credit cards such as Mastercard or Visa. In fourth and fifth place are Paypal with 6.99% and American Express with 6.45% of the total transaction volume.
