Online merchant survey 2023 - Payrexx achieves 1st place as most popular payment provider for Swiss SMEs.

Thun, September 28, 2023. Payrexx, a leading Swiss payment provider, emerges as the most popular payment service provider (PSP) in this year's online merchant survey, leaving PayPal, Saferpay and PostFinance behind.

Percentage of use of the PSPs mentioned among the online retailers surveyed

The online retailer survey, which was conducted for the sixth year in a row by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI), counted a total of 598 participating online stores, of which 441 (74%) are from Switzerland. 82 percent of these are active in the business-to-consumer (B2C) sector, 45 percent in the business-to-business (B2B) sector and 14 percent in manufacturer direct sales (D2C) (activity in several sectors possible). The online retailer survey has been shedding light on the most important trends and operations in the e-commerce market since 2017 and is supported by the Swiss Trade Association, among others. The entire study can be read on the Payrexx website.

Payrexx as number 1 payment provider in Switzerland - with outstanding customer satisfaction

A fundamental part of the study was to find out which payment service provider (PSP) online merchants use to process online transactions. The results of the survey are clear: After Payrexx was in second place last year, the company from Thun was now able to take first place, leaving PostFinance (4th) as well as Saferpay (3rd) and PayPal (2nd) behind. The steadily growing market share and the remarkable growth rate make it clear that Payrexx meets the requirements that Swiss SMEs have of a payment provider with its offering and its approach to work. Payrexx's Net Promoter Score (NPS), which is a key figure for customer satisfaction and loyalty, also speaks for itself. It is measured by the willingness of customers to recommend Payrexx and, with a value of 50, is exceptionally high compared to the competition.

As the online merchant survey also shows, credit card, TWINT*, invoice, PostFinance* and PayPal are the most frequently used payment methods in online stores, but innovative mobile payment solutions and Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) solutions are also gaining in popularity. Online retailers are generally keen to integrate innovative payment solutions and offer their customers a wide range of options.

AI tools in e-commerce: a crucial role for success

In addition to the most popular payment solutions, the online merchant survey also revealed other interesting developments. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important in e-commerce. The results show that 63 percent of the online retailers surveyed use AI tools in their business processes. These tools are used for content creation, personalized recommendations, chatbots, predictive analytics and other applications. By using these tools, online retailers hope to improve the shopping experience for customers and optimize operational processes. Payrexx is also aware of the importance of AI and actively uses these and other advanced technologies in its everyday work.

Furthermore, the online survey also showed a trend away from self-developed online stores and towards the increased use of online store systems. The frontrunners are WordPress (WooCommerce, 14%), Magento (Adobe Commerce, 11%), Shopware (8%) and Shopify (8%).
